This Rokal layout is powered by one power supply (transformer), located in the center of the controls. Power is fed to two speed controllers, one on each side of the transformer. These controllers are used to run the trains.
Attached to these two controllers are the layout control switch boxes. To the left side of each speed regulator are #01681 controls; these have a momentary contact button, and are used to operate the track turnouts. Note that the crossover in the lower right is wired to have one 01681 operate both turnouts.
On the right side of both speed regulators are switch boxes which are used to control the movement of the trains. The 01682 switch boxes are used in conjunction with the color light signals, each of which control a segment of track. As a train approaches a red signal, it enters the controlled segment of track and stops. The 01683 switch boxes are used to allow trains moving in one direction to pass by a red signal set for the opposite direction.
This track schematic is also a reminder that the Rokal line was still evolving in the late 1960's. Taken from one of the last catalogs which Rokal produced, this schematic shows switch control box numbers which are those of boxes produced near the end of the company's model train production, while the schematic of the control boxes shown on another page of this site is from an earlier source. In this case, the 01681 is probably equivalent to the 1659 box. The 01683 signal control box appears to be similar to 1654, while the 01682 box appears to be similar to 1656.
