Welcome

Welcome to the Railroad Guide

This site has material on a variety of railroad topics, both model railroads and real railroads. It also has materials about collecting model railroads.

This site began with “Guide to Z-Scale”, which was the next generation of material which originally appeared in Greenberg’s Guide to Märklin Z”(Greenberg Publishing, 1990; now out of print). When I gained the copyright to the text of that book, I updated the material and began the web site guidetozscale.com.

Things grew out from there with the addition of information about Rokal TT-Gauge trains, the Galesburg & Great Eastern Railroad and on.

You will find material here about:

A guide to the construction of a model railroad layout using Märklin mini-club model trains.  Information includes track components, electrical accessories and design considerations.

Information about building steel mill structures manufactured by Walthers and by Plastruct. Includes detailed instruction notes to complement the Plastruct false-front series kits.

Information about constructing models of the Chicago Tunnel Company.

Information about building the Walthers refinery

  • Traction (in development)

Prototype Railroads:

A coal hauling shortline in Illinois.

An Illinois short line.

An interesting car float operation in Alabama.

Collecting:

A line of TT-Scale electric trains manufactured in Germany from 1948 to 1968

Pages about the early days of a pioneering manufacturer of N-Scale trains which is still in business.

A line of trolley car kits with paper or woods sides, manufactured by the late Paul Moore of Adrian, Michigan
